For many years, I have seen many incarnations of the Cirque Du Soleil franchise, which has been in existence since 1984. Each one provides it’s own unique story line and original music score I can honestly say that I have never been disappointed with any of the productions I have seen.
Tonight I have the pleasure of seeing Cirque du Soleil: Alegra under the big top at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. What makes this particular production exciting is that this is a true Cirque Du Soleil classic interpreted through today’s creative lens. Alegria was first presented to the world in 1994 and has since been viewed by more than14 million spectators in over 225 cities in 19 years of touring through the end of 2013. So now you know why I am so excited to see this production that I have heard so much about.
It is now celebrating it’s 25th anniversary and has revamped it’s costumes, acrobatic routines, set design, and musical arrangements. In fact, the shows theme song was nominated in 1995 for a Grammy Award. With so much to look forward to, I could not wait any longer to get this show on the road.
Upon entering the big top, the atmosphere is instantly magical and you feel like you are in a very special place. That is for good reason because we learn that Alegria means “Joy” in Spanish. Before the actual show starts, there is a ten minute “Warm up” between two clowns that lay a foundation for the story line that will take place. A story of hope and resilience.
The acts that follow throughout the show are unbelievable and astonishing, while extremely dangerous at the same time. A mesmerizing fire dancer, trapeze artists, people dancing on poles, a beautiful hula hoop artist, and contortionists.
The other beautiful aspect of the show are the costumes. Intricately detailed in every way. The costumes must also be functional at the same time while conforming to the movements of the performers. The designers of this production went above and beyond with their designs.
Live music is also a big part of this show and live musicians appear throughout. Accordions, drums, keyboard, bass, and cello are used in most of the show and provide a perfect musical atmosphere. There are also two amazing singers, one representing light (Irene Ruiz Martin) and the other representing shadow (Virginia Garcia Alvez). Combine everything I just mentioned and you have what I think is the best Cirque Du Soleil production to date.
Without spoiling any of the story line, you will just have to take my word and get yourself under the Big Top at Hard Rock Stadium and experience this lovable and fascinating production of Cirque Du Soleil: Alegria for yourself. You will not regret it.
